Repris sous le titre « le pétrole du Parc National des Virunga : motivation sous-jacente des acteurs des conflits armes en province du Nord-Kivu », l’étude se fixe comme principale préoccupation de recherche : en quoi le pétrole repéré dans le parc national des Virunga est une cible. Spécifiquement, il est question de saisir l’enjeu du pétrole situé dans les limites du Parc National des Virunga dans la conflictualité en Province du Nord-Kivu. Sous cette particularité, sous un regard géopolitique, cette recherche présente le rôle stratégique du pétrole et note la question de la centralité des réserves pétrolières repérées dans le Parc National des Virunga. Sous-entendant la question de revendication territoriale, succinctement, cette étude met en évidence les tensions interétatiques dues au chevauchement des réserves de pétrole au niveau de la frontière entre la RDC et l’Ouganda. Egalement, elle dévoile, dans un contexte de bouleversement géopolitique régional, un antagonisme entre la protection environnementale du Parc National des Virunga et le développement pétrolier soutenu par le Gouvernement congolais pour son attrait économique.

Republished under the title "Oil in Virunga National Park: Underlying Motivation of Actors in the Armed Conflict in North Kivu Province," this study focuses primarily on how and why the oil discovered in Virunga National Park has become a target. Specifically, it seeks to understand, using a geopolitical methodology, the significance of the oil located within the boundaries of Virunga National Park in the conflict in North Kivu Province. From this geopolitical perspective, the study presents the strategic role of oil and highlights the central importance of the oil reserves identified in Virunga National Park. Implicitly addressing the issue of territorial claims, this study succinctly highlights interstate tensions due to the overlap of oil reserves at the border between the DRC and Uganda and reveals, in a context of regional geopolitical upheaval, an antagonism between the environmental protection of the Virunga National Park and the oil development supported by the Congolese government for its economic appeal.
